Lap Winding

What is Lap Winding?

Lap winding is the winding in which successive coils overlap each other. It is named "Lap" winding because it doubles or laps back with its succeeding coils. In this winding, the finishing end of one coil is connected to one commutator segment, and the starting end of the next coil is situated under the same pole and connected with the same commutator segment.
Lap winding is of two types –
  1. Simplex Lap Winding
  2. Duplex Lap Winding
This type of winding is used in dc generators designed for high-current applications. The windings are connected to provide several parallel paths for current in the armature. For this reason, lap-wound armatures used in dc generators require several pairs of poles and brushes.

Merits:

  1. This winding provides several parallel paths and high current output.
  2. This winding is used where low voltage and high current are required.

Demerits:

  1. It gives less emf compared to wave winding. This winding requires more no. of conductors for giving the same emf, which results in high winding costs.
  2. It has less efficient utilization of space in the armature slots.
